A US court on Monday sentenced a white father and son to life in prison and their neighbor to 35 years in prison for a federal hate crime related to the murder of a black man.
A US judge on Monday sentenced a white father and son to life in prison and their neighbor to 35 years in prison for a federal hate crime related to the 2020 murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a black man who was shot while hiking in a Georgia suburb in 2020.
Travis McMichael, a 36-year-old former US Coast Guard vehicle repair technician, and his father Gregory McMichael, a 66-year-old former Glenn County police officer who later worked in the attorney general's office, were sentenced in a court in the coastal city of Brunswick. Local, and William "Rudy" Bryan (52 years old).
The three are already serving life sentences after being convicted of murder in a statewide trial last November, and only Brian has been granted the possibility of parole. The three were then convicted in February on federal charges of violating Arbery's civil rights by attacking him because of his race and attempting to kidnap him, and the father and son of a firearms charge.
Federal Judge Lisa Godbey Wood sentenced the three on the federal charges during separate hearings Monday.
Arbery's killing in 2020 sparked controversy over the issues of racial violence and racial crimes in the United States.
In her sentencing, Judge Wood said the widely watched video of McMichael Jr. shooting Arbery at close range with a rifle was engraved in her memory.
"These three demons tore my heart out," Marcus Arbery, Ahmed Arbery's father, told the court. Addressing them, he added, "You hate black people."
