Researchers from the "Warsaw Mummy Project" confirmed in a new study published last July 29 in the journal "Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences" that the mysterious mummy of an Egyptian woman who was believed to be pregnant may not have been carrying a child in In fact, this is a finding that other researchers in the same project reject.
The dispute dates back to the beginning of this year, after a team of Polish scientists claimed that they had discovered the only known example of a pregnant Egyptian mummy. She demanded that the mummy be re-examined and indicated that no bones could be detected through mummy examinations, so determining the presence of the fetus is uncertain.
They are caused by pareidolia.
In the latest study, the researchers said what appeared to be a fetus on X-rays and CT scans was in fact the result of "computer delusion and misinterpretation".
Camilla Braolinska, a bioarchaeologist and co-director of the " Warsaw Mummy Project ", told the Daily Mail that the original research "was not a reliable scientific study", and confirmed a preliminary belief that 4 bundles were inside an abdominal cavity. The mummy is wrapped and mummified.
Braulinska explains that the ancient embalmers put the packages there, and there may be at least one embalmed member of the deceased in the packages, and indicated that it was a well-known practice in ancient Egypt, and that the error that the researchers made in the previous study was the result of an illusion caused by a phenomenon known as “paridolia.” (Pareidolia), a phenomenon in which the mind responds to a random stimulus, usually an image or sound, which is seeing faces in random objects or patterns of light and shadow.
Two of the researchers on the project rejected the results of the recent study, saying that "the Warsaw Mummy Project team does not support this information. The mummy is pregnant."
Previous studies on the mummy
It is reported that the mummy of the mysterious lady was brought to Poland in the 19th century, and the Warsaw mummy project began in 2015. In August 2021, researchers in the project published a study claiming that a CT scan of the mysterious woman revealed the remains of a fetus inside her womb, and that this makes her the first A pregnant mummy known in the world.
And last January, another study by the same Polish research team described how the fetus was pickled, like an egg inside the mummy.
The project team also announced last July, in a report published on the “Warsaw Mummy Project” website, that it is possible that the mysterious lady had cancer of the nasopharynx, which affects the mouth, nasal cavity, and trachea, and that this may be the reason for the death. her death.
