British lawmakers have called for a parliamentary investigation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson for lying about his breach of anti-coronavirus restrictions by attending illegal gatherings during the pandemic.
The move, approved without a formal vote in the House of Commons, means the Parliamentary Privileges Committee will investigate whether Johnson deliberately misled Parliament, a crime that historically requires resignation if proven.
The move was prompted by the opposition Labor Party, and was passed after the government abandoned efforts to get Conservative lawmakers to block it.
The investigation is piling pressure on the conservative prime minister, who was fined 50 Egyptian pounds ($66) by police last week for attending a party in his office in June 2020.
