This CCI order against Google comes on a complaint filed by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA).

The giant IT company Google has suffered a major setback. In fact, the country's anti-trust regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Friday ordered an investigation against Google for alleged misuse of dominant position in the market.

The CCI said, “The vital role of news media in a smooth functioning democracy cannot be overemphasized and it is imperative to ensure that the digital company does not harm the competitive process of determining fair distribution of income among all the stakeholders.” Don't misuse your strong position to deliver.

Violation of the provisions of Section 4 of the Competition Act, the

CCI said in an order that prima facie it is of the view that Google has violated the provisions of Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002, which pertains to abuse of strong position in the market.

Complaint by DNPA

This order has come on a complaint filed by Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA). In this, a complaint was made against Alphabet Inc., Google LLC, Google India Private Limited and Google Ireland Limited.

Recently, CCI had imposed a fine of 202 crores on Amazon

while CCI had recently suspended the approval given to Amazon's deal with Future Coupons. Apart from this, the anti-trust regulator had also imposed a fine of Rs 202 crore on e-commerce sector giant Amazon for violating certain provisions. Approved in November 2019.
