The US Treasury imposes sanctions on Al-Qaeda in Brazil What's the story?

After their inclusion on the list of terrorism, the United States of America announced on Wednesday the imposition of a set of sanctions on entities and persons in Brazil, claiming their association with Al-Qaeda.

On Wednesday, December 22, the US State Department issued an official statement on its website, announcing the imposition of sanctions on three people and two affiliated companies in Brazil, all of whom were involved in providing financial support to Al-Qaeda.

The statement stated that the continued activities of al-Qaeda and its international affiliates pose a threat to countries around the world, stressing the United States' commitment to work with its partners, including Brazil, to disrupt all financial support networks for the organization.

In the same context, US Treasury Undersecretary Brian Nelson stated that "the sanctions will help deny these people access to the global financial system."

At the same time, the United States revealed a list of persons affiliated with the Al-Qaeda support network in Brazil, who were subjected to a series of sanctions, namely:

Ahmed Shoukry Ahmed El Maghribi

Al-Maghraby moved to Brazil in 2015, and is one of the first members of the al-Qaeda network there.

According to the US Department of the Treasury, Al-Maghraby has been in constant contact with members of Al-Qaeda, including his direct official, Ahmed Mohamed Hamid Ali, who resides in Brazil and has been on the US sanctions list since 2001.

It is noteworthy that Al-Maghraby provided financial assistance to the organization, which consisted mainly of buying foreign currencies and conducting commercial transactions, in cooperation with another member residing in Brazil.

Mohamed Sharif Mohamed Mohamed Awad

Since his arrival in Brazil in 2018, Awad played an important role in the organization, participating in the printing of counterfeit currencies, and was also considered an intermediary receiving bank and financial transfers from other al-Qaeda partners in Brazil.

According to the US Treasury statement, Awad owns a company that sells furniture based in São Paulo, which was also included in the sanctions list.

Al-Khatib, who is based in Brazil, owns a furniture company in the Brazilian capital, and was one of the most prominent members who provided financial and technological support to the organization.

His company was also included in the sanctions list.

The 79-year-old US president said, "I am a very fateful person. If I am as healthy as I am now, if I am in good health, I will run again."

In response to his insistence on his position in case he had to confront former President Donald Trump again, Biden said, "Why wouldn't I run against Donald Trump if he was a candidate? That would increase my chances of running."

In this context, former US President Donald Trump did not hesitate, on any occasion he had, to express his strong rejection of the results of the previous elections, promoting his version that is not based on any evidence that the presidential elections that took place in November 2020 were “stolen from him.”

And with his recent announcement of his willingness to organize a press conference on January 6, coinciding with the first anniversary of his supporters' attack on the Capitol, Trump indicated his intention to run for another term.

Returning to Biden, his advanced age was likely among many that his deputy, Kamala Harris, might accordingly be his natural heir in power, but his recent media statement dispelled these odds, as analysts confirmed that Harris, who is not very popular, may not be able to enter the house.
