Turkey's exports of defense and air industries have recently been achieving records, and by the end of this year, it is slowly approaching the threshold of $3 billion.

Thanks to its success on the ground, the demand for Turkish defense and air products is increasing globally, as its superior performance in operations inside and outside Turkey contributes to increasing interest in it and thus increasing its exports.

Record numbers

According to data from the Council of Turkish Exporters, the Turkish sector's exports in 2018 amounted to two billion and 35 million and 956 thousand dollars, and in 2019 they rose by 34.6 percent, reaching two billion and 740 million and 988 thousand dollars.

While the sector's exports recorded a decrease of 16.8 percent last year due to the consequences of the spread of the Corona pandemic, achieving two billion and 278 million and 27 thousand dollars.

The defense and air industries reached a new record in exports before the end of 2021, although the impact of the epidemic has not yet passed completely, and the priorities of countries focus on different areas, especially health.

The volume of exports in the 11 months of this year amounted to two billion and 793 million and 974 thousand dollars, an increase of 39.7 percent over the same period last year, setting a record for exports of defense and air products.

The United States of America, Azerbaijan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Germany and Ukraine top the list of countries most reluctant to buy defense and air industries products from Turkey.

It is worth noting that many observers and military experts stress that the actual numbers of Turkish defense exports far exceed the announced numbers, due to the preference of many countries not to disclose the size of their military and defense deals, and therefore they are not included in the classification.

United State

The United States of America topped the list of countries importing the most Turkish defense and air products during the period from the beginning of this year to the end of last November, with one billion and 32 million and 615 thousand dollars.

Thus, US imports of Turkish defense and air weapons recorded an increase of more than 50% compared to last year, as they jumped from 687 million and 402 thousand dollars in 2020 to more than one billion dollars during 11 months of this year.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan ranked second in the sector’s list for the current year with 192 million and 126 thousand dollars, recording a decrease of 24.8% from 2020, during which it imported from the Turkish sector itself an amount of 255 million and 650 thousand dollars.

Qatar

Qatar ranks third in the list of top buyers of Turkish defense and aviation weapons during 2021, with $180,544,000, after purchasing armored vehicles, naval platforms and weapons systems.

Doha is witnessing a remarkable increase from the same statistics last year, as its imports from the Turkish sector increased from 43 million and 560 thousand dollars in 2020 to more than three times that, specifically by 314.5 percent.

The head of the Turkish Defense Industries, Ismail Demir, stated that the good relations with Qatar "are generally reflected in our cooperation in the defense industries," noting that his country exports to Qatar many military equipment such as armored vehicles, electronic warfare systems, camera detectors and various security equipment.

UAE

In fourth place on the list, the United Arab Emirates recorded a total of 161 million and 373 thousand dollars of Turkish defense military imports during the current year, a relative decrease from last year, during which Abu Dhabi bought 188 million and 203 thousand dollars from the same sector.

On the sidelines of Erdogan and bin Zayed's meeting in Ankara, the Turkish and Emirati sides signed agreements that include investments and memoranda of understanding in 10 different areas, which prompts observers to predict the increase in the pace of trade exchange between Ankara and Abu Dhabi, including the military and defense industries that characterize Turkey.

Germany

Germany came fifth in the list, by purchasing defense and aviation weapons from the Turkish sector estimated at 144 million and 467 thousand dollars, maintaining a steady pace and rate compared to last year, when Berlin imported 142 million and 816 million dollars from the Turkish defense and air industries.

Turkey and Germany have strong and reciprocal military trade relations, as the former is the largest buyer of German weapons within NATO, and Berlin is eager to acquire Turkish weapons, especially after the huge development in the Turkish industry, which has placed it in the ranks of technologically advanced countries, attracting global attention and interest. to purchase its premium products.

Ukraine

Ukraine recorded a huge rise and a major boom in its military, air and defense imports from Ankara, after the total of those imports jumped from 17 million and 589 thousand dollars in 2020, to 123 million and 193 thousand dollars during the current year, which means that the same number doubled to about seven fold in one year.

Ukraine is especially willing to acquire Turkish drone weapons because of the reputation it enjoys, and the decisiveness and victory it has achieved in many battles and conflicts in Syria, Azerbaijan and Libya.
