A French technology company accused of "complicity in the torture" of the opposition in Egypt
The French judiciary accused the company "Nexa Technology" of participating in "acts of torture and enforced disappearance" of dissidents in Egypt, by selling surveillance equipment to the Egyptian regime.
On Sunday, the French judiciary accused the company "Nexa Technology", which was involved in the sale of surveillance equipment to the Egyptian regime that would have enabled it to track opponents, in October, of "complicity in acts of torture and enforced disappearance", according to an informed source who spoke to Agence France-Presse.
The indictment was issued by the investigative judge, about four months after the accusation of four executives and company officials, according to a judicial source also confirmed.
For his part, the lawyer for "Nexa Technology", Francois Zimray, refused to make any comment on the matter, according to Agence France-Presse.
In 2017, a judicial investigation was opened after a complaint filed by the International Federation for Human Rights and the League for Human Rights, with the support of the Cairo Institute for Rights Studies.
The organizations relied on an investigation by "Telirama" magazine that revealed the sale of a "eavesdropping system worth ten million euros to officially combat the Muslim Brotherhood" in March 2014.
Called Cerebro, this software allows you to track electronic communications of a target in real time, for example from an email address or a phone number.
Non-governmental organizations accused this program of serving the wave of repression against the Egyptian president's opponents, which resulted in "more than 40,000 political detainees in Egypt," according to the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.
The investigation, conducted by the "crimes against humanity mogul" at the Paris Judicial Court, aims to establish a link between the use of surveillance and repression.
