Farmers protest in India: Five people, including two farmers, were killed during a protest in Uttar Pradesh
Five people, including two farmers, have been killed in a farmers' protest in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Lakhimpur Kheri District Magistrate Dr Arvind Chorasia confirmed this in an interview with BBC journalist Sameer Tamaj Mishra.
He said two people were crushed under a car and three were killed when the vehicle overturned.
It may be recalled that Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshu Prasad Moria was about to inaugurate some government projects in Lakhimpur Kheri, after which he was to attend a program in the home village of Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra.
On this occasion, the farmers wanted to gather here and record their protest in front of them.

What happened in Tconia?
Meanwhile, some farmers were injured in a BJP supporter's vehicle in the town of Takunia, after which enraged farmers set a car on fire.
The situation became tense and the Deputy Chief Minister's program was stopped in the middle. In view of the tense situation, a heavy contingent of police was deployed at the spot.
On the other hand, the Indian Farmers Union has alleged that three farmers were run over by the car of the son of the Minister of State for Home Affairs.
Farmer leader Dr Darshan Pal said in a statement that the helipad in Takunia was cordoned off to prevent the Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister from boarding the helicopter.
"At the same time, three high-speed vehicles carrying Ajay Mishra, his son and brother arrived," he said. One farmer who was hit by the vehicles died on the spot while another died at the hospital.
Dr. Darshan Pal said that his leader Tajinder Work was also seriously injured.
Political reaction
Reacting to the incident, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP of using "cruel tactics".
He tweeted that the killing of farmers who peacefully opposed agricultural laws by the son of the Minister of State for Home Affairs was a very inhuman and cruel act of the BJP government.
He clarified that Uttar Pradesh would no longer tolerate the oppression of arrogant BJP workers.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also reacted strongly to the incident.
Priyanka Gandhi wrote on Twitter that this proves how much the BJP hates the farmers of the country. Don't they have the right to live? If they raise their voices, will you shoot them, trample them in the car? This is a country of farmers. Not the cruel ideology of the BJP.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted that he would not let this sacrifice go in vain.
