The company "Facebook", which is the giant of social networking sites in the world, announced, Thursday, changing its name to "Meta".

"We've learned a lot from issues related to social media and living on closed platforms, and now is the time to take advantage of all these lessons to help build the new chapter," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during a developer conference.

Although the name of the group has been changed, the name of the different networks will remain the same, and the Facebook network, the Instagram application and the WhatsApp service will maintain their names.

The American company chose the new name in line with its policy to create an integrated virtual world based on 3D technology known as the Metaverse.

The word (metaverse) combines the words "meta" and "universe" in English, meaning "the superuniverse" and constitutes a kind of digital alternative to the physical world that can be accessed via the Internet.

Metaverse technology is supposed to make it possible to increase human interactions online by freeing them from physical constraints thanks to virtual and augmented reality technologies.

The new name comes after a scandal involving the company in early October, after Frances Hogan, a former official in the site's civil integrity team, revealed that Facebook had committed a number of violations, including fueling ethnic violence in Ethiopia and Myanmar, and indicated the site's silence about practices committed by celebrities and public figures. Under what I called the "white list".

It is noteworthy that Facebook is not the first well-known technology company to change its name as its ambitions expand. In 2015, Google completely reorganized itself under a holding company called Alphabet.

With this move, she wanted to signal that it is no longer just a search engine, but a sprawling group of companies that make self-driving cars and health technologies.

Snapchat rebranded Snap in 2016, the same year it started calling itself the camera company and introduced its first Spectacles.
